Our society is a culmination of a longstanding dream of many different
individuals during their stay in Cambridge. Indian Residents at
Cambridge always felt a sense of loss at their inability to participate
in different Indian festivals being so far away from India.
In 2002, spurred on by nostalgia and the creative urge, residents
and students of Cambridge decided to organise a Durga Puja and
celebrate Sharodutsav. The goal was not only to bring the local
Indian diaspora together but also to provide a platform for
showcasing India’s rich cultural diversity and help build a
multicultural Britain. The event proved a grand success and was
attended by more than 200 people, who had a day of spiritual retreat,
cultural enrichment and traditional gastronomical delights.
The event marked a new chapter in the history of multicultural
Cambridge leading to the birth of the Indian Cultural Society
